The ``hamanasu'' is a flower that is widely distributed in Hokkaido and is representative of Hokkaido. In 1978 (Showa 53), to commemorate Hokkaido's 110th anniversary, it was designated as the flower of Hokkaido by referendum.

It blooms in subarctic regions with large temperature differences and is highly cold resistant , growing naturally in sandy areas along the coast. It is a short deciduous shrub and belongs to the Rosaceae family , and its branches are characterized by sharp thorns.
