Heavy-duty cardboard (hereafter referred to as reinforced cardboard) is attracting attention worldwide as a sustainable material. In addition to reducing the amount of wood used, it is a very attractive material because it is lightweight, reduces CO2 emissions during transportation, and can also improve work safety for workers.

Living in the naturally rich land of Hokkaido, environmental issues are close to home for us. We believe that this project will be a step towards building a sustainable society and protecting the global environment.

What is heavy cardboard (reinforced cardboard)?

It was created in the United States in the 1950s as a packaging material to replace wooden boxes, and is now used all over the world as a material with high load-bearing capacity and high strength .

In addition to environmental issues, wood also has other benefits such as worker safety and rust resistance, and is attracting attention as a material that can replace steel, aluminum, and plastic , as well as wooden boxes for packaging heavy items.

In recent years, it has also been used as a material for interior items such as furniture, store fixtures, and disaster supplies.

Reinforced cardboard differs from regular cardboard in that the outer flat paper (liner) is very thick and hard , and the corrugated core (core) sandwiches the inner liner, creating a two-layer structure that maintains its strength.

In the case of two layers, each sheet is about 10 mm thick and has pressure resistance about five times that of regular cardboard.

Regular cardboard is made from recycled paper, but reinforced cardboard is made primarily from virgin pulp , and the secret to its strength is its longer-than-normal fibers.

We can pack precision machine parts such as engines and semiconductors, as well as liquids and powders.

Taking into account the usage method and environment, we design the product to maintain strength , taking into account the direction of the liner and core.

Advantages of heavy cardboard (reinforced cardboard) material

Conservation of wood resources

When compared with boxes of the same volume, reinforced cardboard can reduce the amount of wood used by 60% .* The main raw material is wood cut from managed forests certified by the Global Forest Stewardship Council ( FSC ), making it environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Deforestation is progressing rapidly around the world due to excessive logging and fires caused by spontaneous combustion. This has a major impact on climate change, and our daily lives are at risk from global warming and air pollution caused by increased greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to reinforced cardboard material is a major step towards conserving resources and protecting the planet.

Reduce CO2 emissions

The compact external volume and light weight reduce CO2 emissions during transportation and transfer by truck or container.

Furthermore, reinforced cardboard is recyclable and reduces CO2 emissions when burned during disposal.

Water resistance/weather resistance

The front and back liners are made with International Paper's Hydro Kraftliner , a material made primarily from water-resistant long fiber. The reinforced core uses a water-resistant adhesive, and meets the strict Class 2 (weather resistance) standard of the former US Federal Standard PPP-B-640d. While the strength of the paper decreases slightly when it gets wet, it returns to its original state once it dries.

*It is not waterproof. If the product is submerged in water, the above will not apply, so we recommend using it without contact with water.

Material safety

The surface of reinforced cardboard is not coated with varnish or other coatings and is unbleached, making it an environmentally friendly, pure material .

Components from the remaining trees react to ultraviolet rays from fluorescent lights and direct sunlight, causing discoloration due to sunburn (turning red temporarily and slowly turning yellowish-brown over the course of several years), but these are all characteristics unique to paper made from whole natural materials.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has certified the safety of this material as being "safe for contact with food."

It has also been certified for use in food packaging, so it can be used safely even in homes with small children.

Shortening work time/ensuring work safety

When assembling or disassembling wood, nailing or removing nails may be necessary, but reinforced cardboard is easy to fold or disassemble, and the work time can be significantly reduced. In addition, since no hammers or saws are required, the work can be done safely.

Even large fixtures used in stores and pop-ups can be moved safely with a small number of people.

High stacking strength

Two-layer reinforced cardboard is about five times stronger than regular cardboard, and can withstand loads of over 15,000N *.

Suitable for storage

The surface liner of reinforced cardboard has a near- neutral pH value and a moisture content of 8% to 9%, making it suitable for storage. The low moisture content also makes it rust-resistant.

Recyclable/Easy to dispose of after use

After use, it can be disassembled and recycled in the same way as regular cardboard. Because it is made primarily from long fiber, it can be reborn as the highest quality pulp material into new cardboard.

Size/Small lot support

You can create original fixtures and other items. They are manufactured by cutting out boards with a maximum width of 2,200 mm and a maximum length of 5,000 mm.

In many cases, no molds are required, and we can also handle small lot orders of just one unit .
